Start Your Training Today for the Walk to Fight Diabetes

On October 4th I will be walking 6 miles in the annual Step Out for Diabetes Walk. Today is a great day to get started training for your 12,000 Steps to fight diabetes.

Feature

For the past several years my family and my coworkers have been joining the American Diabetes Association Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes. Why? Because we are all affected by diabetes. My grandfather had diabetes. My dad has had diabetes for many years, I have had gestational diabetes and now have prediabetes. And my sister just found out she has diabetes a month ago.

My husband's side of the family have so many with diabetes that I don't even know the number. Since part of diabetes is genetic, I do the diabetes walk not only for my family members that have diabetes but for my kids that have an overwhelming family history of diabetes. I want them to avoid this crippling disease as long as possible. That sounds a little on the side of gloom and doom doesn't it?  Well, I have seen a lot of pain and suffering in some of my family and clients that have lived with diabetes many years. I want to do what I can to save my kids from that pain and suffering.

So here are some more great reasons to join in the walk to fight diabetes.

  • Walking is one of the best ways to control blood sugars.
  • A walking event gives you motivation to start training and get in shape.
  • You can track your progress towards 12,000 steps (6 miles) with your pedometer.
  • 30 minutes of walking 5 days a week has been shown to prevent diabetes
  • You will set a healthy and positive example for your kids or grandkids.
  • You will have fun and feel good when you have accomplished a 6 mile walk.
  • Walking strengthens muscles and burns fat.
  • Regular walking can boost your metabolism and help control weight.
  • Walking is a great way to exercise your heart and good for the circulation.
